‘RedFeb’ – encourage your patients to consider importance of heart health

Heart Research Month – or ‘RedFeb’ as it is also known – aims to raise awareness throughout February about the impact of heart disease in Australia and the need for ongoing research.

Current research in Australia includes using stem cells to repair damaged heart muscles, cell function in heart attacks, heart function in premature babies, and identifying triggers for heart attack.

You can keep up-to-date with the all the latest when it comes to heart disease research by visiting the Heart Research Australia website.

As a medical practitioner, you will no doubt be aware that heart disease is the largest killer of Australians, impacting two out of three families.

Are you doing enough to ensure your patients are taking the necessary steps to keep their hearts healthy?

Patients should be encouraged and supported to give up smoking; remain physically active and take regular, moderate exercise; achieve and maintain a healthy weight; enjoy a nutritious, balanced diet; and monitor and manage other risk factors including blood cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes.

More information on maintaining a healthy heart can be found here.

RedFeb is organised by Heart Research Australia, which raises funds for research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and associated medical conditions.

There are a number of community events, activities and initiatives happening throughout February that you and your patients can get involved with. For more information, visit the Red Feb website.
